How Long Does Rekeying a House Take?

How long a whole-home rekey takes in Nashville, and what makes it faster or slower — from a Middle Tennessee locksmith.

How rekeying works

Rekeying re-pins the inside of your existing lock cylinder so old keys stop working and a new key operates it. It does not replace the lock hardware — it only changes the pin combination inside.

Typical timing

An individual residential cylinder takes about 5–10 minutes to rekey. A typical Nashville home with 3–5 exterior door locks is finished in 30–60 minutes.

What slows it down

Older or weathered locks (especially in older Nashville homes) sometimes need to be cleaned or lubricated before they can be rekeyed properly. Locks with Kwikset SmartKey mechanisms are quick when they are healthy, but a jammed SmartKey has to be reset carefully. Some higher-security cylinders (Medeco, Mul-T-Lock) take longer because their pinning is more precise.

Rekey vs replace

If a lock is worn out or the hardware is not up to standard, replacing is often smarter than rekeying. We will tell you honestly which option makes sense for your specific hardware.
